Some migrant workers and their families who had worked through the pandemic and whose work permits expired, stopped working while their applications are in process.
Typically, applicants, whose work permits expire while their applications are being processed can receive a bridging open work permit (BOWP) that allows them to work while the paperwork is done and ensures their employment.
However, this is not applicable with the new pathways launched in May that aimed to grant permanent residence to 90,000 migrant workers and international graduates.
