Following media reports about purported mass refusals for Pakistani students wishing to get a Canadian study permit, the High Commissioner of Pakistan intervened with the Canadian government. According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Pakistan is the third-largest beneficiary of study permits in South Asia. According to the data by IRCC, after Pakistan was included in the Student Direct Stream (SDS), the percentage of study permits issued to Pakistani students increased from 33% to 46% in 2019. Pakistan's High Commissioner to Canada, Raza Bashir Tarar, stressed that more and more Pakistani students will seize opportunities in Canada. He also emphasized the need to meet the conditions to avoid the possibility of refusal.
